THE ARCHANGELS

ANGELS ARE A HOT TOPIC

From prime time TV to numerous new books, reports of supernatural manifestation (in the form of angelic spirits) are coming to us.  The Catholic Church has always recognized the existence of angels.  Angels are an integral part of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments.  They have even repeatedly come to Jesus Christ – at Gethsemane, for example – as well as to Mary and Joseph.  Such was the Annunciation, as well as the message to Joseph concerning Mary’s condition with child and then the need to flee into Egypt.

There seems little doubt that this century, particularly the second half of this century, is resplendent with accounts of angels intervening on our behalf.  We all know we certainly need the help.  From the many letters we receive, it is also quite obvious that many people are becoming intimately aware of the existence of their own guardian angels.  I admit to being in that class. My guardian angel is named “Fortitude,” and he has made his presence known to me in many, many ways in the past ten years.  I shall not get into storytelling here, but there is no doubt in my mind as to his presence.  He automatically awakens me in the mornings in time for Mass, and he even awakens me in the middle of the night when it is my turn to spend an hour before the Blessed Sacrament.

All of that seems to be confirmed by the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states, “From infancy to death human life is surrounded by [angels’] watchful care and intercession.  Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.  Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God” (#336).  Our Creator has entrusted to angels the task of protecting, as well as guiding our paths toward the light and the truth.  St. Paul tells as much, for in requesting that we put on the armour of God to combat the devil, he warns that our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, against the spiritual forces of wickedness.  It is also a realm where angels excel.

St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
